In 2016, the Township developed and approved a Master Plan for Independence Park which is located at the southeastern quadrant of Pennhurst Road and Dunlap Drive.

In April 2021, the Township applied for a grant in the amount of $300,000 for Independence Park Phase 1 & 2 Development through the DCNR Community Conservation Partnership Program (C2P2). This is the third time that the Township will be applying for this grant, which was unfortunately unsuccessful the last two times. In 2019, the Township received a grant in the amount of $250,000 from Chester County Department of Open Space Preservation, which no funds have been expended while the Township awaits the results of the DCNR grant application. The Township expects a determination by DCNR if the Township’s project will be funded by October 2021.  The Township is prepared to match 40% of the overall park construction budget for Phases 1 &2 totaling $362,993.

The Township was recently awarded a $300,000 grant from DCNR and a $250,000 grant from Chester County for the development of phases 1 and 2 of Independence Park to include signage, link to the Schuylkill River Trail, pavilion, and parking.  The 96-acre property was once part of the Pennhurst State School and Hospital.  The Master Park Plan for all phases and more information can be found below.

Some of the improvements that are proposed are: overall paving improvements, traffic flow and parking signs, township park entrance sign, new pavilion, ADA loop trail, park spine trail/SRT (Schuylkill River Trail)link, fence and gate for cemetery protection, trail way signage, woodlands preparation, and erosion control.

Below is a copy of the full approved Master Plan and a more updated plan highlighting Phases 1 & 2 which are subject of the current development proposal.  Please feel free to contact the Township Office with any questions.
